7 Beautiful Places to Watch the Sunset Around Llanelli
There is something special about watching the sun slowly disappear at the end of the day.
Around Llanelli, we are lucky to have miles of coastline, open estuary views, peaceful beaches and waterside paths where the evening sky can completely transform the landscape.
Some sunsets arrive with bold shades of orange and red. Others are softer, with gentle pinks reflecting across the water. Even on a slightly cloudy evening, the final light of the day can still create something beautiful.
Here are seven lovely places around Llanelli where you can stop, slow down and enjoy the sunset.
In this guide:
1. Llanelli Beach and North Dock
2. The Coastal Path at Pwll
3. Sandy Water Park
4. The Bynea Section of the Millennium Coastal Path
5. Machynys and the Coastal Path
6. Burry Port Harbour and Lighthouse
7. Cefn Sidan Beach at Pembrey Country Park
1. Llanelli Beach and North Dock
Llanelli Beach is one of the easiest places to enjoy a sunset without travelling far from the town centre.
From North Dock, you can walk along the promenade towards the beach and find several places to stop. The wide view across the Burry Estuary gives the evening light plenty of room to spread across the sky.
When the tide is in, the colours can reflect beautifully across the water. At low tide, the wet sand and tidal channels can create a completely different scene.
The Millennium Coastal Park runs alongside approximately ten miles of the Burry Estuary, with viewpoints and views across towards the Gower Peninsula.
Good for: An easy evening walk, photography, sea views and somewhere close to Llanelli town centre.
Personal thought
North Dock is one of those familiar places that can feel completely different once the evening light begins to change. It is worth staying for a little while after the sun disappears, as some of the best colours can arrive just afterwards.
2. The Coastal Path at Pwll
The section of the Millennium Coastal Path around Pwll offers long, open views across the estuary.
It is quieter than some of the busier areas around North Dock, making it a lovely place for a peaceful evening walk or cycle. There are several benches and open sections where you can pause and watch the changing sky.
On a clear evening, the distant coastline becomes a silhouette while the remaining light stretches across the water.
The wider coastal route links Llanelli with Burry Port and Pembrey, passing beaches, viewpoints and open sections of the estuary along the way.
Good for: Quiet walks, cycling, uninterrupted coastal views and peaceful evenings.
Personal thought
Pwll has a calmness that suits sunset watching. You do not always need to search for a dramatic viewpoint. Sometimes a quiet bench, an open sky and a few minutes to yourself are enough.
3. Sandy Water Park
Sandy Water Park offers something slightly different from the open coastal locations on this list.
The lake can catch the evening light and reflect shades of gold, pink and purple across the water. The surrounding trees and reeds add another layer to the view, especially when they appear as dark silhouettes against the sky.
A path circles the lake, so you can take a gentle evening walk while looking for the best position. From Sandy Water Park, it is also possible to continue towards the nearby Millennium Coastal Park and Llanelli Beach.
Good for: A gentle walk, lake reflections, families and anyone who prefers a sheltered setting.
Personal thought
The reflections are what make Sandy Water Park special. Even when the sunset itself is partly hidden, the colours across the lake can still create a beautiful evening scene.
4. The Bynea Section of the Millennium Coastal Path
The Bynea end of the coastal path is sometimes overlooked, but it deserves a place on this list.
Here, the landscape feels wider and more natural, with views across the Loughor Estuary towards the Gower. The mudflats, salt marsh and winding water channels can catch the final light of the day beautifully.
The Millennium Coastal Park stretches east towards Bynea and west towards Pembrey, forming part of a mostly flat coastal route along this part of Carmarthenshire.
It can be especially peaceful during the evening when the path becomes quieter and the birds begin to settle.
Good for: Wildlife, peaceful walks, estuary landscapes and somewhere away from the busier coastal areas.
Personal thought
Being from this side of Llanelli, I think the Bynea stretch has a character of its own. It may not have the cafés or busier promenade found elsewhere, but that is part of its charm. The open estuary and quieter surroundings make it a lovely place to finish the day.
5. Machynys and the Coastal Path
The coastal path around Machynys combines open water, marshland and distant views across the estuary.
This part of Llanelli’s coastline is particularly attractive when the sky begins to glow behind the reeds and wetlands. Depending on the tide, you may see reflections across the water or warm light falling across the exposed shore.
The nearby Llanelli Wetland Centre sits within a large landscape of lakes, pools, lagoons and salt marsh beside the Burry Inlet.
You do not need to enter the Wetland Centre to enjoy the surrounding coastline, as the public coastal path provides plenty of open views.
Good for: Nature, birdwatching, photography and wide wetland landscapes.
Personal thought
This is a good place to watch the whole landscape change rather than only looking for the sun. The reeds, water and distant shoreline all begin to take on different colours as daylight fades.
6. Burry Port Harbour and Lighthouse
Burry Port Harbour is one of the most recognisable sunset locations near Llanelli.
The boats, marina, harbour walls and small lighthouse create plenty of interest in the foreground, while the open coastline provides a beautiful backdrop.
You can walk around the harbour or follow the path towards the beaches on either side. The area has two sandy beaches, with views of the lighthouse and coastline throughout the year.
Discover Carmarthenshire even recommends watching the sunset over Burry Port Lighthouse as a local photo opportunity.
Good for: Photography, harbour views, evening walks and a more dramatic sunset scene.
Personal thought
The lighthouse makes this one of the most photographable locations on the list. Even after the sun has gone down, the harbour lights and remaining colours in the sky can make it worth staying a little longer.
7. Cefn Sidan Beach at Pembrey Country Park
For a wide, open sunset with plenty of space around you, Cefn Sidan is difficult to beat.
The long sandy beach, dunes and uninterrupted horizon create a wonderful setting as the sun begins to lower. At low tide, the wet sand can reflect the sky, while the dunes provide plenty of natural shapes and textures for photographs.
The beach can be reached through Pembrey Country Park, while walkers and cyclists can also approach the park using the Millennium Coastal Path from Llanelli and Burry Port. The surrounding dunes form part of a protected Site of Special Scientific Interest.
Good for: Big skies, beach walks, landscape photography and watching the sunset somewhere spacious.
Personal thought
Cefn Sidan can make you feel a long way from everyday life. There is something very calming about standing on such a wide beach and watching the final light disappear over the horizon.
A Few Sunset-Watching Tips
Sunset times change throughout the year, so check the time before leaving and try to arrive at least 20 to 30 minutes early.
Clouds do not always ruin a sunset. In fact, broken cloud can sometimes produce the strongest colours as the light catches underneath it.
Remember that the temperature can drop quickly beside the coast, even after a warm day. Bring an extra layer and carry a torch or use your phone light if you will be returning after dark.
Take extra care around tidal areas, muddy shorelines and unfamiliar paths. Remain on recognised routes and never walk onto exposed sandbanks without understanding the tide.
Basically...
You do not have to travel far from Llanelli to find a beautiful sunset.
From the familiar promenade at North Dock to the peaceful estuary at Bynea, the harbour lights of Burry Port and the open sands of Cefn Sidan, every location offers something slightly different.
The next time the evening sky begins to brighten, take a short walk, find a comfortable place to stop and give yourself a few minutes to enjoy it.
Sometimes the best local views are the ones waiting quietly at the end of an ordinary day.
